Art and function seem to be at odds with one another. At least in our culture. “If it’s purty, that means it ain’t usable.” “If it’s usable, there is a limit to how purty you can make it.” “Pretty is as pretty does.” I could list many more platitudes that try to separate function and art. I would make the case that dedicated craftsmen strive to keep both at the top of their game. When pressed, they might even have a hard time defining where one ends, and the other begins. They are woven seamlessly throughout their work in a way that transcends the debate. That’s were I would like to be with my work…an integration of all things functional and at the same time, beautiful.
