I had thought about the possibility of making a saddle with an inlaid seat using beaver tail leather, but didn’t think it would work. The largest tails I’ve used have been five inches wide at their widest, so one tail would hardly be wide enough to get the job done. I had trouble imagining piecing two tails together…how would you make the seam smooth on the top side? You would still need two enormous tails to get it done. Then a customer comes along and asks me about it. I reconsidered and finally got my head around how this could be done in a way that we would be satisfied. I’d worked it through in my head enough times that when it was time to do it, things went very well. The seam is a rolled welt very much like I would use for a swell fork cover. Having used beaver tail leather on bucking rolls since about 1987, I know this seat will never wear out.
